The Para Commando Brigade is a special operation force of the Bangladesh Army. The headquarter of this special force brigade is located at Sylhet. It has two para commando battalions.

When did this Brigade was formed?

The participation of the special operation unit in the Bangladesh Armed Forces was introduced during the liberation war in 1971.

From 1974, These special operation units existed in Bangladesh Army under various names, mostly in the form of a specialist in jungle warfare and counterinsurgency units. 

A separate special operations capable unit of the Bangladesh Army was first officially formed on 30 June 1992 as the 1st Para Commando Battalion, which is the first modern special force of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.


 The Para Commando Brigade received National Standard from the President of Bangladesh on 1 June 2015. Ad hoc Para Commando Brigade was formed on 4 September 2016. By October The Brigade got its full structure and strength. The official flag of the brigade was first raised by the prime minister of Bangladesh on 28 October 2020.

History of Para Commando Brigade:

Bangladesh Liberation War Period 

               Crack Platoon 

It was a specialized urban warfare unit of Muktibahini during the liberation war of Bangladesh. Sector 2 commander Khaled Mosharrad sent these specialized urban guerrillas to Dhaka city on June 1971.
The most famous operation of these platoons was Operation Hotel Intercontinental. These guerrilla platoons successfully launched a raid on photon intercontinental where a delegate from the World Bank and that time Pakistani authorities were concentrating on a meeting. In this guerilla operation, ten to fifteen soldiers of the Pakistan Army were killed and many were wounded. This Crack Platoons launched 82 guerrilla operations during the liberation war.

Special Warfare Wing:

This unit was established at the School Of Infantry and Tactics at Jalalabad Cantonment, Sylhet, In 1976. This was the very first step towards the formation of a special force in Bangladesh after the war. In Army commando course and counter-insurgency course started at the special warfare wing in 1980. 

The Special Warfare Wing was expanded to Special Warfare School in 1989.  In 1988 Army Airborne School was established at Sylhet Cantonment under a special warfare wing. In the para, the training course started for the first time in the special warfare school in 1989.


1st Para Commando Batallion

Regimental Flag Of Para Commando Batallion 

This battalion started at Jalalabad Cantonment Sylhet on 30 June 1992. 

Their flag was raised in May 1993. This Battalion came out as a full-fledged- regiment in 2015.


2nd Para Commando Battalion:

It was raised in 2016 after the 1st commando battalion. It was finally raised in 2019.

United Nations peacekeeping

Since 1988 Bangladesh is participating in various kinds of missions in the UN. Currently, they are in South Sodan, Haiti and Mali.

Dhaka Holey Artisan Bakery hostage crisis 

This force also took participated in the Holey Artisan crisis. They save the hostage from the hotel.

During the attack, 9 Italians, 7 Japanese, 2 Bangladeshis, 1 Indian, and 1 American were killed by the perpetrators 

Operation Mayurpankhi 

An aircraft from Biman Bangladesh was hijacked by
a gunman inflight while en route to Dubai from Dhaka.

But The commandos took only eight minutes to conclude. As a result, the hijacker was shot dead by the commandos and, 148 passengers and crew got free from the hostage situation.
