Feed Your Focus
We’ve all been there: sitting at our desk with an urgent deadline and a dawdling mind full of various thoughts, right? As I write this blog at the very last second with pressure to submit it fast, I largely feel the need to have a focused and concentrated mind and a more controlled self. Therefore, I thought, why not share and discuss some ideas we could use in these situations?
What is concentration?
Remez Sasson defined concentration as
"the capacity to direct one's attention following one's will" in Will
Power & Self Discipline. Controlling one's focus is what concentration
entails. It is the ability to concentrate your mind on one topic or thought
while blocking out all other unrelated thoughts, ideas, emotions, and sensations.
What's fogging up focus?
Our daily routine is dominated by
switching between phones and computers. We are constantly flooded with messages
from WhatsApp, email, Telegram, and a half-dozen other apps. That is why I
believe technology is the most common cause of our unfocused selves.
There are definitely other reasons. The next important ones to mention are stress and emotions. We face a hard time focusing when our heads and heart aren’t in the right place. Dealing with mental pressure and anxieties and at the same time hoping to give total focus isn't possible.
Furthermore, poor eating habits, insufficient physical activity, insufficient sleep, an unhealthy lifestyle, distractions, and a lack of proper day planning can trigger a person's mind to become unfocused.
What’s the solution?
We require a focused mind to keep us moving throughout the day. If we don't want to waste our valuable time, we must do certain things that will ideally make us more productive.
2. Logout of social media. Close social media and other applications, turn off notifications, and store your phone in a bag or backpack. As described in HBR, researchers discovered that cognitive capacity was considerably better when the phone was out of sight, not just turned off. Shutting off both internal and external disturbances can help you to focus.
3. Follow mindfulness and meditation. Meditating or engaging in mindfulness activities can enhance well-being, mental fitness, and focus. Our brain calms down and our entire body relaxes during the meditation process. Throughout the procedure, we focus on our breathing to avoid being distracted by our minds.
4. Get proper sleep. A sufficient amount of sleep is required for both our body and mind to operate properly. Sleep deprivation causes drowsiness, which reduces focus. Different people require varying amounts of sleep to remain alert and focused throughout the day. We can create the practice of being focused by learning about our personal sleep cycle.
5. Taking a short break and connecting with nature. Regardless of how many things we follow, there may be times when nothing can help us focus. Instead of fighting with that situation, it's best to let go and take a break. Going outside to engage with nature can have a significant effect. A simple 20 to 30-minute walk, grabbing a snack, or drinking your favorite beverage can help you drive away the boredom and refocus.
Conclusion
Learning how to increase concentration requires a while. The first step in improving your focus is to understand how it affects your life. If you are struggling to meet promises, getting sidetracked by pointless things, or not progressing toward your goals, it is worthwhile to look for concentration assistance so that you can focus on what matters to you most.
