A Silent War:Understanding and Coping with Depression
Depression is very common and serious mental health condition or disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.It is a complex and difficult condition or illness.A combination of genetic,environmental and psychological factors can contribute to depression.Understanding and coping with depression is crucial for those who experience and suffer from it,as well as for their loved ones.
Understanding "Depression":
Like other diseases or illness,depression also has many specific symptoms.Additionally,these symptoms can vary from person to person,but some of the common symptoms and issues caused by depression are:
- Feeling sad or empty most of the time without any reason.
- Facing difficulty to sleep or sleeping too much.
- Loss of enjoyment or interest in the activities that were once enjoyable.
- Feeling exhausted or loss of energy.
- Changes occurs in appetite or weight.Many peoples have the tendency to eat too much when they are depressed,they can also have the tendency to eat junk foods.Again,there are peoples who can not even eat their daily meals while suffering from depression.Additionally,gaining weight or losing a large amount of weight can occur.
- Feeling guilty or unworthy without any reason.Sometimes,life feels become meaningless and worthless to the depressed people.
- Facing difficulty to concentrate or to make decisions.Depressed people can not pay attention to any work because of their unstable mental condition.Again,while taking any decision they feel confused most of the time.
- Suffering from excessive fears or worries.
- Extreme mood swings.
- Inability to deal with daily problems or stress.
- Leaving friends.Besides,depressed peoples sometimes do not want to maintain good relationship with family members and relatives.
- Alcohol or drug addiction can be occured.
- Sometimes,depression causes delusions,paranoia or hallucinnations.
- Excessive anger,hatred,violence can be caused by depression.
- Thoughts of death or suicide can come to the mind of a depressed person,which can create worst situations.
- Sometimes,depressed peoples seek attention from others,they want importance and extra care from their close persons.
- Some physical problems such as headache,back pain can be caused by depression.
Many depressed individuals typically experience symptoms that are severe enough to interfere with daily activities including job, school, social interactions, or interpersonal relationships. Some people may experience general misery or unhappiness without truly understanding why.
Although there may be some distinctions, the typical signs and symptoms of depression in adolescents and teenagers are comparable to those in adults.
Depression in young children might manifest as melancholy, impatience, clinginess, concern, aches and pains, refusal to attend school,underweight.
Teens may experience symptoms such as sadness, irritability, feeling down and unworthy, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling misunderstood and overly sensitive, using alcohol or drugs for recreation, eating excessively, engaging in self-harm, losing interest in regular activities, and avoiding social interaction.
Older persons may experience various or less noticeable signs of depression, such as: memory issues or character alterations,physical discomfort, exhaustion, insomnia,often preferring to stay in home rather than leave the house to interact with others or try new things,suicidal thoughts or feelings.
Depression can strike anyone at any age, but it typically occurs in teens, 20s, or 30s persons.There are more women than males who have been diagnosed with depression.The causes of depression are unknown.As other mental disorder,vairety of factors maybe involved,such as: Biological differences,brain chemistry,hormones,inherited traits.
The factors that may increase the risk of developing or triggering depression include:
- Low self-esteem,being so dependent,pessimistic.
- Stressful event,death or lose of loved ones,financial problems,a difficult relationship.
- History of other mental disorder.
- Any serious disease.
- Some medications also cause depression.
Coping with "Depression":
It is really difficult to deal with depression,but there are steps that can be taken to manage it.Some helpful strategies are:
- Keeping in touch with family members and friends,sharing and expressing own feelings to them.Socialising can also help to improve mood.
- Daily exercise and others physical activities like sports and yoga can prevent the symptoms of depression and improve mood.
- Staying with the people who can offer emotional support and encouragement.
- Practising self-care by getting enough sleep,eating a healthy diet,engaging in activities that bring pleasure and relaxation.
- Trying to identify and ignore negative thoughts,which contribute to depression.Cognitive-behavioural therapy(CBT) can be helpful in this regard.
- Setting realistic goals and working hard to achieve them.
- Seeking help from professionals.Consulting with a healthcare professional,like a doctor,psychiatrist,or therapist is highly helpful.Sometimes,therapy or medications can be needed.
- Facing own fears and tough situations is highly helpful to boost confidence.
Recovery from depression is not impossible but it takes time and effort.So,people need to be patient with themselves.If you are suffering from depression,always remember that nobody is perfect,even our life is not perfect and smooth.There are some days in our life,when we feel low and it is quite normal.In this beautiful world,there is no unmixed blessings.
