Pharmaceutical Importance in Cosmetic Industry; Adiba Fairooz (22346045)

I know most of the girls in new generation are freak on makeup and skin care. I am extremely fascinated in makeup and cosmetic product and this is one of the reason to admit myself in Pharmacy. Cosmetics are used for maintaining healthy skin, preventing skin aging, enhancing beauty, and promoting general wellness. However, most of these products contain active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) that help to deliver their intended benefits. The pharmaceutical industry plays a vital role in the development and manufacturing of these cosmetic products. Many cosmetic products such as sunscreens, anti-aging creams, acne treatment, hair growth products and makeup products contain several active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) that have therapeutic benefits; they are usually used in low concentrations to ensure their safety and efficacy.

One of the primary APIs used in skin care is sunscreen. Sunscreens protect the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun, which can cause skin cancer, premature aging, and sunburn. Sunscreens contain a variety of chemicals such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate, which work together to provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Several APIs are used in makeup to treat and prevent acne. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are two of the most common APIs used in acne treatments. Salicylic acid helps to exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation.

Another essential API used in makeup is retinoids. Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A such as retinol and retinoic acid and are known for their anti-aging properties. They help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots by stimulating collagen production in the skin. Retinoids are commonly found in night creams, serums, and eye creams.

Pharmaceutical ingredients are also used in hair care products. One example of a pharmaceutical ingredient used in hair care products is minoxidil. Minoxidil is used in hair growth products to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. Some shampoos may contain pharmaceutical ingredients, depending on their intended purpose. For example, medicated shampoos may contain active ingredients such as coal tar, salicylic acid, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide to treat conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis.

Lipstick contains a combination of waxes, oils, pigments and also pharmaceutical ingredients.
One common pharmaceutical ingredient found in lipstick is sunscreen, which is added to protect the lips from UV rays. Another ingredient that may be used is hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance that helps to hydrate and plump the lips.

Eyeliner and mascara contain a variety of pharmaceutical ingredients, including preservatives to prevent bacterial growth, thickeners to provide the desired texture, pigments to add colour, and film-forming agents to help the product adhere to the skin and lashes. Some products may also contain moisturizers, sunscreens, and other active ingredients to condition or enhance the appearance of the lashes. It is important to choose products that are safe and suitable for your individual needs.

The pharmaceutical importance of makeup in the development and manufacturing of these products cannot be overstated. APIs play a critical role in the formulation of cosmetics by providing various therapeutic benefits such as sun protection, anti-aging, and acne treatment. The use of APIs ensures that makeup not only enhances our natural beauty but also improves the overall health and wellbeing of our skin. So, the next time you apply your favourite lipstick or mascara, take a moment to appreciate the pharmaceuticals that make it possible.
